Fall Yardwork: Pace Yourself Before You Pick Up the Rake

October 9, 2026

Practical ways to make fall cleanup more manageable.

Leaves do not wait for a convenient day. Once the yard needs attention, it can be tempting to rake, bag, carry, and clean up everything in one afternoon.

Before you start, make a plan that fits what you can comfortably do today. A smaller job completed at a manageable pace is still progress.

Give yourself a manageable starting point

If you have been less active recently, begin with a short session rather than a full afternoon. Gradually increase activity as tolerated. A brief walk before you get to work can help you ease into moving.

Pick one section of the yard to tackle first. You do not have to finish the entire property to make the day worthwhile.

Make each load lighter

Several smaller trips are often more manageable than one heavy load. Avoid lifting heavy items when possible, and ask for help when a task exceeds what you can comfortably handle.

When lifting, keep the load close, bend through your hips and knees, and turn with your feet rather than twisting while carrying it.

There is no prize for the fullest leaf bag. Leave room to move it comfortably.

Take breaks before you feel worn out

Pause periodically and change positions. Try dividing the work into separate sessions instead of rushing to finish before dark.

Keep the next day’s plans in mind, too. Yardwork should fit into your week rather than use up all the energy you need for everything else.

Pay attention to symptoms

Limit activities that cause or increase pain. Pain that persists or interferes with everyday life deserves an evaluation rather than repeated attempts to push through it.

Seek prompt medical care for back pain with fever or new leg weakness or numbness. New loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin, requires emergency care.
